Family Rules Project Completed

FaMiLy RuLeS
I found this adorable project on a blog I love to read, called the Pleated Poppy. She created this canvas with all of her favorite family rules and then she encouraged her readers to do the same. My mom visited this weekend and we both decided to accept the challenge. Here are the finished pieces:

This one is mine:

Here's what the rules say:

  1. always be kind
  2. tell the truth
  3. forgiveness is mandatory
  4. keep your promises
  5. dream big, smile often, be happy
  6. never leave angry
  7. encourage others, share in their joy
  8. reading is good
  9. say your prayers...thank God for this family

The canvas I was inspired by on the Pleated Poppy had about 20 rules that were so great...but I used a much smaller canvas and had to limit my rules to 9 and they had to be shorter in length. This is why I am thinking about making another one...have any suggestions for more rules (post them here)?

Here is my Mom's:

Here's what my mom's rules say:

  1. Keep your promises
  2. Friends welcome
  3. Encourage others
  4. Spoil grandkids
  5. Wipe your paws
  6. Always give xo's
  7. Lots of presents
  8. Walk on the Beach
  9. Be kind and smile

It took us longer to complete than I thought, but we both had a great time! Leave a post if you have any suggestions for more rules...

I might make another one...

Surprised by the Flash

After church on Sunday I made Wesley stay in his carseat while I took some pictures of his "big boy" outfit. I only got one picture where his eyes weren't SOOOOO wide open. Every time I would take a picture he would get anxious from the flash and open his eyes really wide so he looked goofy in the pics. See for yourself:

Wide Eyes...

Even Wider Eyes...(and check out those nostrils...gotta love it!)

I found this costume the other day and I just couldn't resist. When I put it on him he wouldn't move a muscle, he stayed perfectly still (kind of like when you put clothes on a puppy). Wesley wasn't quite sure what was going on. Tonight we are taking Wes on his very first trip to the Pumpkin Patch!

Over a Year...

Hard to believe that we launched Stock Insurance Services just over a year ago. Ben has worked hard to establish his clientele and expand the services he offers. Now, a year later, we are beginning to regularly post the latest insurance related news, advice and links. Stay tuned for ways to save money, time and insurance head aches! Love Stitched Contest!!!!

I LOVE this blog:
Right NOW they are having a contest to win AWESOME goodies! Click on the link above to see what you can get for FREE. All their stuff is soooo cute. Wesley has a Love Stitched onesie that he looks adorable in. They have the cutest jewelry too!

Yom Kippur

Every year my best bud Rachel invites Ben and me over to her family's Yom Kippur celebration. This year was Wesley's first "break the fast" experience. He loved being smothered with kisses from his auntie rachy! The food was so yummy and it was great to spend time with our best friends!

Sleepy Daddy = Funny Baby

The other morning I woke up with Wesley and we went about our morning routine where I change his diaper and clean him up for the day. When I set him on the changing table I couldn't figure out why his PJ's looked different from the ones I put him in the night before...hmmm....
I mean, wasn't there a hippo on the front of these PJ's? (or am I losing my mind)...then I got the idea to check the back of his PJ's and here is what I found:
Thats right! The poor little guys PJ's were on backwards. It seems that Ben was VERY tired when he woke up in the middle of the night to change wesley's diaper. So tred that when he put Wesley's PJ's back on him he did so backwards.
Wesley spent the rest of the night with a frontal wedgie and his feet not fitting in the proper feety holes. Not the mention the buttons on the onesie going all the way up his neck instead of down his back (wesley didn't seem to mind one bit). I couldn't stop laughing while I changed his diaper. I just had to grab the camera to capture this moment...
Notice his wedgie and how his feet are on backwards!

Little Man Getting BIG

Wesley is officially 3 months old! I can't beleive how quickly time flys (too quickly). I already miss his early stages of life, but I am also LOVING how cute he is now. He has finally realized that he has hands and they sure seem to taste good because they are in his mouth all day. He will suck them so hard they turn red and if I try to pull them out of his mouth he SQUEALS. Today I put a long sleeved shirt on him with stripes. I couldn't figure out why he spent the morning staring cross eyed at his arms...then I realized he was mesmorized by the stripes on his shirt. Here are some pictures of him over the past 3 weeks...he is growing so quickly (as you can see by the clothes that are a bit tight and short on him already)!

BIG Smiles

Ben got this shirt for him (it's just like one he has).

He has started putting his full body weight on his legs when we lift him like this...

Giving his flirty eyes to the camera.

Crazy Boy

I LOVE this outfit...but as you can see it will need to be retired soon. He hardly got to wear it before it was too short for his legs and tight on his tummy.

Such a boy...look at that chunk :) (Don't worry, I have boxed up that shirt and he won't be sporting that crop top again any time soon.

Remembering Us...In the Beginning

Remembering Us…In the Beginning

We have been together for a while now.

Enough time that we’ve become comfortable — content with the relationship we’ve developed, the life we’ve built.

But the other day I came across something that reminded me of our overwhelming and passionate beginning.

I was reminded of the time when I was so consumed with love for you that I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

I was reminded of the time I spent many sleepless nights wondering if you felt the same way about me as I felt about you.

I was reminded of the time when I wanted nothing more than the promise, the guarantee that you would be mine foreveItalicr.

I was reminded of the time when we could talk for hours without running out of things to say.

I was reminded of the fluttering in my stomach every time our eyes met after being apart.

I was reminded of our first kiss, our first long walk, our first conversation about the future, our first fight, our first sacrifice for one another and our

first “I love you”.

I was reminded of the moment when I just knew, and the moment we promised to never let our passion subside…

And as I was reminded of how it all began, I began to think about how it had turned out. I think about the face of our son, his tiny fingers and toes, his pure joy when he looks into your eyes—I think about our years full of special moments, sacrifices, milestones and life lessons—I think about the life we’ve built on the foundation of “our beginning”.

And as I remember us, I am overcome with realization—realization that while our lives may be different now, our love never changed…from the beginning.

Happy Birthday Emy!

hApPy BiRtHdAy eMy!!!

Dear Emy,

Happy Birthday to the most wonderful sister-in-law, sister, daughter, wife, friend and auntie that a person could ask for. You deserve to have the most wonderful day! I want to take this special day to thank you for all that you do for this family. The love you have for each of us is obvious in all the nice things you do for us. Whether you are the official "smore-maker" for your favorite neices and nephews, the one willing to sleep on a deflated air mattress, the one who drives across the country to see the ones you love, the go-to babysitter for the little ones, the 2nd mom to my little wesley, the best friend to those of us who need to talk, or (and especially) the best auntie that a kid could ask for--your love goes above and beyond! Thank you for helping this family continue to grow closer. Thank you for your love and we LOVE you! -ashley

Post-Bath

Wesley was kind of cold after his bath so I put him in his little beanie and warm sleeper sac...he started sweating after 5 minutes and I had to take it off. He is such a sweaty baby.

Wesley was sitting on Ben's lap and it looked like he was watching the computer with his daddy.

Blessing The Little Guy

This Sunday was Wesley's baby blessing. It feels like just yesterday that I found out I was pregnant and noe he has already been blessed. I wish I could slow down the clock. So many of our friends and family drove out to share the special day with us. Ben was inspired to give the most beautiful blessing.

Tummy Time Improved

Wesley was less lazy this time around with his tummy time. He sat up so high that I thought he might fall backwards. This picture looks like he is waving at the camera...and YES, I have become one of those moms who only blogs about her child!

Inspired

My friend Brittany (the one who took the awesome pics of Wesley), is possibly the craftiest person I know. She can turn anything into something amazing...so, she was at my house the other day and I was complaining about wanting a new kitchen table. She suggested refinishing it. Now normally this is a task I would NEVER even consider (I have NO patience)...but after convinching from Brittany that this would not be too difficult a task, I accepted the challenge. First I sanded down all the wood, cleaned it off, painted it, sanded it, then glazed it...then Brittany came over and showed me how to recover the cushions with a fun fabric.

I can't believe Wesley is almost 2 months old. He is starting to smile and laugh at his toys. Here is a pic of him flashing his dimples at Mommy!

Tummy Time

Today Wesley attempted Tummy Time on his Boppy! He loved it...for all of 5 minutes...then he squealed until I picked him up to cuddle.

Cute tushy!

Today is Part of Eternity

A quick thought from this months Ensign magazine:
"Some of us look forward to a time in the future--salvation and exaltation in the world to come--but today is part of eternity." -David O. McKay
How often I live my life looking forward instead of enjoying the present. I fall into the trap of "I can be completely happy when we own a home" or "I can be completely happy when we have retirement set up"...But there will always be "I can be happy whens"...they never go away...as soon as you accomplish one, a whole new set emerges.
Of course it is important to be concerned with the future, however, as President McKay points out, it is equally important to enjoy TODAY (for that too, is part of eternity)!
Here's to TODAY!

Wesley's Photo Shoot...more to come

Beach House Stock Vacation

This week we had our family from Wyoming, Utah and Santa Barbara out for a visit. Thanks to our generous friends, we were able to all spend a few days at the Langs beach house in Oxnard (right on the beach)! We had sooooo much fun! Matt and Lyndsi and their 2 amazing boys Justin and Brandon drove from Santa Barbara. Lyndsi brought tons of yummy food for us to eat! Kim and Sam and their 4 awesome kids (Daniel, Kinsee, Sammy and Conner) drove all the way from Wyoming. Emily came with Kim and the kids from Utah. We had such a great time--the only thing missing were Ben's parents, Emy's husband Trent, and Daniel and Lauren (we missed you guys)--but we will certainly get together like this again next summer with new baby Saddie!

Here is Sammy...I call him minnie Ben because I am sure this is what Ben looked and acted like when he was a kid. Just look at those dimples.
Here are the little guys chillin at the beach. Sammy, Conner, Brandon.

The Stock siblings. Matt, Emily, Ben, Kim.

The kids are playing in the huge hole that their cool Aunt Lyndsi dug for them. She even dug out little seats for them to sit in.

Aunt Emy holding baby Wesley. He LOVED all his aunts so much. He would just sleep and smile for them all day long!
Justin and Sammy had a blast together playing in the ocean. Justin is soaked and freezing cold in this picture.

Sammy holding his baby cousin Wesley. He did such a good job. Sammy has a ton of energy, but as soon as he was holding Wes he got very calm and serious. He was so careful with him and kept kissing him on the head.

At night we roasted s'mores and Kinsee taught everyone a goofy game. Here are Kim, Kinsee, Ben and Daniel playing the game. It was hilarious!

Conner's very first s'more.

The girls with the three new baby boys. Lyndsi and Brandon, Ashley and Wesley, Kim and Conner--all in their baby carriers on the beach.

Kinsee cooling off.

All the girls and their boys!

I LOVE this group shot!

Uncle Matt took the boys into the ocean. This was Sammy's first time in the ocean. Look at what a good cousin Justin is being helping out Sammy.

Silly sisters Em and Kim. No they did not plan on wearing matching outfits the entire trip--it just worked out that they did!

This was one of the funniest parts of the trip. When Conner and Brandon met for the first time this is what happened. Brandon was so sad and Conner was just trying to play.
Here is the picture right before Conner tackled Brandon. Such cute babes!

The beautiful Shumway kids.

Kinsee and Daniel LOVED riding in the convertible. We thought Kinsee would die of excitment when Taylor Swift's "Our Song" came on while they were riding with the top down.
Such a cutie pie (Conner).

Bringing Baby Home

Feeding Wesley :)
Wesley sleeping in his toy box. We had Brittany come over to take Wesley's pictures. Of course it was the first day he decided to be fussy for three hours. Brittany was a trooper and was patient with him while he peed and pooped on all her blankets. I took some pics from ben's iPhone. We will put the edited pics up when we get them.

Ben burping his boy.

So this is the very humbling picture that every mom has taken of her moments after deliviering. I look like I just ran a marathon...my lower body was still numb in this picture. From the look of my skin color, I clearly lost some blood in the procedure..and going on 48 hours with no sleep.

I am not to happy in this picture because I just had 3 different nurses attempt and fail at putting in my IV. That was more painful than the epidural. Finally my doctor came in and had the IV in my arm in 15 seconds. He was a pro!

Ben surprised me with a Tiffany's necklace with Wesley's name on it moments before my C-Section. This is also the last picture of me pregnant...such a huge tummy!

July 8, 2009 Wesley to Arrive!

So we just got back from our final doctors appointment. I am 38 weeks pregnant today and Wesley is measuring at 8 pounds already. I am not dilated at all, my cervix has not changed shape or softened, and his head has not gone into my pelvis yet (sorry, lots of graphic info). My doctor is strongly encouraging a C-Section since he is so large and is still growing, plus it doesn't seem as if my body is planning on going into labor any time soon. After discussing more details with Dr. Fine, Ben and I set the date for a C-Section on Wednesday, July, 8th. So in one week from today we will officially be parents. WOW!

Update to Wesley's Room

I got this adorable quote decal off www.etsy.com to go over Wesley's crib. Ben and his sister Emily were nice enough to put it up this weekend. Thanks to Emily's interior design skills, they were able to get it up nice and straight/centered. Thanks Em. This picture was taken from Ben's cell phone so its not the best quality, but I wanted to do a quick post anyway...now all we need is baby Wesley to arrive (I am 35 weeks along as of today).

Two Awesome Baby Showers

I am so blessed to have so many people in my life that love and take care of me. Here are some pictures from Wesley's two baby showers. There will be more to come as soon as I download them off my other camera. Thank you to every one who was able to be there and share in the special occassion. I love you all!

Psycho Squirrel!

We have a crazy squirrel living in our backyard who tries to get into our house almost every day. Here are some pics of him climbing on our screen door while the slider is open. He wouldn't even jump off when Ben hit the screen many times with a broom. I was standing 2 feet away from the screen door when I took this picture and he wasn't fazed. Humans don't scare him!! We have to be sure that we close every day behind us, or else!

32 Weeks and VERY Ready for Wesley to Arrive

So this has been an exciting week in the progress of baby Wesley. First, as you can see from all the pictures, his baby room, clothes, furniture, toys and the millions of other things he "needs" are all starting to come together. His room has quickly become my favorite room in our house. I find myself just sitting in there every chance I get. Today his adorable bedding for the crib arrived and I washed and set it all up. An amazing lady and friend of mine (Marty Spencer) surprised me with his bedding (pictured below) as well as his cute little pea coat, doggy mat, shoes and stuffed animal. She certainly spoiled me. Thank you to all my family and friends who have taken such good care of us with our first little bundle of joy. We are so grateful and blessed to have you in our lives!

His little pj's...
One more thing! On Wednesday I had my 32 week check up with Dr. Fine, my OB. I had an ultra sound scheduled for 34 weeks to see how big Wesley is. However, when I went to the doctor my uterus was measuring 2 weeks ahead of schedule (measured 34 weeks and I am only 32) so she decided to do the ultra sound early. I was so excited and then shocked when the ultrasound got a close up shot of my VERY VERY CHUBBY baby. Dr. Fine laughed and said he had like 3 chins (Ben didn't think this was as funny as I did). He was huge! The average size of a baby at 32 weeks is 3.75 pounds...Wesley currently weighs 4 pounds 13 ounces (thats almost 5 pounds)! Dr. Fine wants him to stay in my tummy as long as possible so she doesn't want to induce labor early. However, she thinks my pelvis is too small to deliver a 9-10 pound baby so depending on how things go it looks like we may have a scheduled C-section a week before the due date of July 15th. This is not certain, as we need to keep checking his growth in these final weeks. The good news about a C-section is that they would be able to also do my abdominal hernia surgery at the same time, so that I won't need to come in after delivery for that yucky surgery. The ab hernia was caused by Wesley being sooo big and growing so fast that he separated my abs from each other (it doesn't hurt, so no worries). I will keep everyone posted!

These are his little booties that I think he will wear home from the hospital.

Ben painted the walls light blue.

All his burp rags and wash cloths.

Here is the changing table Ben and I got this week.

I am obsessed with baby shoes!

Mini Baby Shower

My friend Kristnyn had a baby boy almost 6 months ago and because I was feeling so sick from the pregnancy I had to throw her a mini and belated baby shower after he was born. He are a few pics of our little event.

Here are some black and white pics I took of baby Jackson.

I made a flag banner out of scrapbook paper that spelled his name.

Here are little star sugar cookies with sweet baby quotes attached to them.

Happy 30th Birthday Ben

Ben turned 30 on March 15th and to celebrate he completed another 100 mile bike ride with a good friend named Dale. I went up to the race in Solvang to cheer for him at the finish line. He completed the ride in 5 hours and 55 minutes! As you can see, I am rather pregnant here.

Baby Brandon's Blessing

Ben and I went up to Santa Barbara a few weeks ago for our nephew Brandon's blessing. He looked so adorable in his white outfit that his mom picked out. You can even see in one of the pictures below that it looks like he is glowing!

Poem to My Bestfriend by Ashley 2006

In elementary school, I think I had fifteen really good friends. In middle school, I had about ten. In the beginning of high school my true friends narrowed to about seven. Today, I can count my close friends on one hand. However, in all of my schooling and experiences I have had only one best friend through it all. She has been the reason I have made it this far. It is her loyalty and compassion that have built the foundation for the morals I live by today.
In kindergarten, you taught me to share. Don’t be selfish. It truly does feel better to give than receive.
In first grade, you introduced me to art. Finger paints and paper chains. Everything is beautiful if you take the time to notice.
In second grade, you demonstrated compassion. Not everyone in the world has a reason to smile so give him or her one. Give one stranger a compliment everyday. “You do your job so well”, to the school crossing guard. Or “You have such a nice smile”, to the boy sitting alone at lunch. You never know what one conversation can do for another’s life.
In third grade, you taught me that it was okay to fail. Winning is not everything. It is how we respond to failure or to disappointment that reflects our true character.
In fourth grade, you helped me shave my legs. Boys don’t like girls with more hair then them. They get jealous. Don’t waste your time with jealousy.
In fifth grade, you taught me about boys. Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, and don’t put up with those who are reckless with yours.
In sixth grade, you gave me support. It didn’t matter to you that I still wore a training bra and dressed in boys clothes. You saw what was within me and taught me to see what was within others. Ignore the surface…dig deeper. What really matters lies beneath the surface.
In seventh grade, you understood. You understood when I broke away from our bond. I was twelve going on thirteen and I knew everything. It doesn’t matter if you’re thirteen or one hundred and seven, no one ever knows everything.
In eighth grade, you forgave me. You showed me that forgiveness was the only way to dispose of the past. Forgiveness is wiping a clean slate and starting fresh. First forgive yourself, and than forgive those around. Only then can you travel the path towards happiness.
In ninth grade, you taught me that love can give a false impression. Love is not only passion and desire. Love extends to loyalty, support, comfort, friendship, patience, and trust.
In tenth grade, you taught me what sports are really all about. Soccer used to be about scoring the most goals, getting in the newspaper, and being the most valuable player. Today I know that soccer is not about any of those things. Now I can lead a team to victory without ever winning a game. I can play an entire season without ever scoring a goal or winning an award and still be proud of my performance. I can do this because you taught me that soccer is about leadership, setting an example, teaching, and growing as an individual.
In eleventh grade, you taught me to breathe. Take a deep breath, put down the homework, and enjoy life. Remember why we are here. It’s not to finish the history homework or English paper, it’s to live. Breathe, relax, and live. You never let me forget that.
In twelfth grade, I taught you not to worry (as much). I knew college would be rough, but I also knew that I would be okay because I had a best friend like you. In my freshman year of college, you taught me the difference between a house and a home. They always say that you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. Not until I moved away to school did I realize all the efforts you put into making our house a home. From dozens of flickering candles in the evenings, to the smell of baking cookies on Christmas, to the sound of Jackson Browne playing on the stereo when you were in a really good mood. You always made sure that our house was a place to come home to. Whether you realize it or not, these little things are the traditions that I look forward to passing on to my children.
In my second year of college, you taught me to let go. Just because you lose someone you love does not mean you have to forget them. Instead, let their memory inspire you to fulfill the goals and dreams you know they would have accomplished.
In my third year of college, you gave me the strength to find faith. Despite my stubbornness and pride, you continued to pray that I would learn the true meaning behind the words charity, hope, and faith. Your prayers led faith in my direction. It was only a matter of time before the faithfulness you instilled in me blossomed. When I told you that I had found an answer to your prayers, you supported me—as I knew you would.
In my fourth year of college, you taught me that growing up didn’t mean growing old. Graduated, married, working full-time, living on my own...it didn’t matter…I could still progress and enjoy the silliness that life offered. Take in the little things—when you look back on your life 20 years down the line you’ll realize that the little things got you where you are today.
In the final days before my marriage, we have taught each other. We have both learned to appreciate the moments spent with those you love most. Whether it was belts and jewelry, the last cup of ice, or our stories after a long day of work—we both learned to share. As the wedding approaches, I know there are things I will miss. I’ll miss the early-morning sound of you opening my door to check if I’m awake. I’ll miss the smell of breakfast burritos on Saturdays. And I’ll miss our late night venting sessions and talks about life. Although I will only be a few miles away, I will greatly miss those simple moments we have grown so accustomed to sharing with one another. I know that much may change yet nothing will be different.
I want to thank you Mom. Thank you for your life lessons. Thank you for your hugs and kisses. Thank you for your blood, sweat, and tears. Thank you for your sacrifices. Thank you for you unconditional love and affection. Thank you for being the wind beneath my wings. And I thank God for you.

Dinner with Friends

Last night we had dinner at the Stirlings house and were able to hang out with their new baby Jackson...he is sooooo adorable and he loved Ben. Even though its winter he didn't want any of his clothes on. Ben was making him laugh by making his legs move like he was riding a bike.

Valentines Day at the UCSB Game

Ben and I drove up to see the UCSB game and spend Valentines Day with Matt and Lyndsi. Ben was excited to be able to bond with our new nephew Brandon. He is soooooo adorable. He has just started sucking his index finger when he gets really sleepy. See if you can find the picture where Brandon is glaring at Ben for smothering him.
I think this picture is hilarious! Brandon is sick of all the kisses from his Uncle Benny!

A CANCUN THANKSGIVING

Ben and the Lang gang went zip lining over this lagoon.

They were even brave enough to swing upside down.

We visited the Mayan ruins in Tulum. It was so interesting.

If you look behind Julie and Ashley you will see a giant iguana. They romed all over the ruins.

This is the view of the ocean from the temple at Tulum.
Hanging out at LAX very early in the morning before our flight.
Everyone is getting a quick lesson in how to ride a jet ski.

Here is Ben right after he almost crashed into the dock.

Emily-sorry it took so long to post this pic-I took it this morning. We moved out of our apartment into a house. Across the street is an Elementary school which is very noisy but Ashley likes it a lot. We moved in October 1st.

Ojai Century Ride

(right) We completed another 100 mile ride- this is the start of the ride in the center of Ojai.

(below) Ashley was very strong this race and I had to draft her to keep up during our stretch by the beach.

She went so fast that she wore out her tire.

Adorable Justin

videoThis is our nephew, Justin, being adorable as usual! Sorry you have to watch it with your head twisted sideways.

Mammasita

My Momma just sent over this pic of us at the park where Ben and I had our reception. In the comments section is the poem I wrote and gave to her just before my wedding.

100 Miles and Counting

Unlce Benny was soooo excited when lil Justin was waiting for him to pass by on his bike during a 100 mile ride through Santa Barbara! Ben is a bike riding maniac. I am so proud of how motivated cycling makes him. I love riding with him, but latley it has been too cold for me...so we take spin class together at the gym.

This is our little Troy doggie!

Isn't Troy adorable?! Ben and I were not exactly dog lovers until lil Troy came into our lives. Now we LOVE pups! If we were allowed to have dogs at our place we certainly would (a Golden Retriever)!

BEST Show on TV

Recently, Ben and I were introduced to the BEST show on TV by our dear friend Rachel (aka Rachy Pooh). Now Ben would likely disagree, but I would venture to say than The Office may be more hilarious and entertaining that Friends. For other Office enthusiasts such as ourselves, I have added a section on this blog for you to post your favorite Office moments or quotes...in addition, I would like to you post your very own personal "Office" moments. No doubt, we all experience moments at work when we think "wow, I wish this was being recorded, because no one will believe me"...please share via the "post comments" section!

Ashley's Version of the "Story of Us"

How They Met:

Her version: I just knew.... "Summer love"...that’s how it all started! The beginning of our relationship is best described by the cheesy cliché "love at first sight". Yes, I realize that makes some people nauseous but I must be honest that after our first date…I just knew! It was my last summer at UCSB and I had the humbling job of cleaning the University gym. Ben was working the basketball camps at the gym at the same time. I remember when I saw him for the first time I knew there was something different about him—someone I wanted to get to know. So after three days of Ben avoiding eye-contact with me, I finally went out of my way to introduce myself to him. “By the way…My name is Ashley”, were the words we first exchanged. I knew from the surprised expression on his face that my bold introduction had caught him off guard. I also knew from the adorable dimple filled smile he flashed me and the way he looked at me that this was going to be the beginning of a “summer love”. I spent the rest of the week actually excited to show up to work. I remember going out of my way to “coincidently” be run into him in the halls, or be working in the same room he was coaching. I remember Ben would save me a sack lunch meant for the players and we would go eat together and discover everything we had in common. From playing soccer, coaching little kids, traveling Europe, and spending time with our family it seemed we had everything in common. Except one thing…I lived in California and he lived in Wyoming. It seemed that a summer love was all this chemistry was going to amount to. However, after our “serendipitous” good-bye experience at the airport (which you can read about in Ben’s story), I knew that some how we would find a way to make this work. A little over a year later I found myself on the best road trip of my life. Ben and I were driving across the western states of the U.S. in his packed up car to move him out to California to start our lives together. In January, when Ben proposed I never felt more sure about anything in my life! Ben is my balance, my sanity, my best friend, my soul mate, my life…

Ben's Version of the "Story of Us"

His version: True Serendipity… You know that saying "God works in mysterious ways"? Our love was greatly blessed by that quote and I know that the Lord did so by helping our paths cross. I will never forget the summer of 2004. Ashley was working at the U.C.S.B gymnasium and I came from Wyoming to help my brother (Matt) with the basketball camps. I had eyed her across the gym and was immediately attracted to her. After Ashley made the initial move to introduce herself, I asked her on a date a few days later. I took her to Borders. I asked her to find three books and one movie that would tell me about her and I did the same. We both chose SERENDIPITY for the movie and.....well the rest is just history. The moment that she captured my heart happened the day that I had to leave to go back home. I literally feel like a movie can be made about this...The morning I boarded my plane in Santa Barbara my heart was sad since I didn't know when Ashley and I would see each other again or what would come of the love we had just discovered. I looked out of the plane praying that Ashley would show up so I could see her for a few moments before taking off. I didn't have a cell phone at the time so I couldn't call her. As the Captain broadcast over the intercom that we were ready for departure and now going to close the doors, my heart dropped. My hopes of seeing Ashley were quickly shattered. At least I thought so. As the doors we closing, a hand slipped through the crack and I could clearly hear a flight attendant shout "Give this note to Ben Stock"! My heart quickly shot up from being dropped a few moments earlier. A flight attendant immediately got on the intercom and asked for Ben Stock. I was in the front row and reached out to get the note that had restored my heart back to its proper beating. It was a note from Ashley expressing her love. She did come to the airport and I am forever grateful that she did. As the plane ascended, I knew that something special had started. Now, here we are and I can't imagine my life without her. We compliment each other in ways that only true love can explain. She is my true love!
